My first taste of what I called then as "French pop" ('cause i'm boring like that) was when I watched "Youth in Revolt". In it, the female lead, Sheeni Saunders, was in love with everything French and particularly adored Jean-Paul Belmondo (an actor) and Serge Gainsbourg, who I would find out later on is one of the most noted figures in this music genre's success back in the '60s.
But it wasn't Serge Gainsbourg that had me gaga over this music, but the lovely Brigitte Bardot or BB as I want to call her, with her song, "Ca Pourrait Changer", which made me feel part sultry and part happy as i've discovered the French and pop music respectively, are wont to make you feel.
So there it was, my love affair with everything French gained a new layer as I downloaded pretty much everything I could find by BB and a few others by Jacques Dutronc. Happiness ensued and then I kinda forgot about it.
But then this happened last week at Mr. Draper's birthday bash. (Woo-hoo for the return of Mad Men!)
And now I have a name for that music that never never fails to take me to my happy place, Yé-yé music. Of course, it had to be ye-ye. Why didn't I think of that?
If you also want to get to know ye-ye music, here's a a good primer over at Flavorwire : A Field Guide to 1960s French Ye-ye Pop.
